Baby Crib Safety

Crib safety has become increasingly important as more and more babies end their life too soon while sleeping. This is something that no parent wants to think about, yet there can be serious consequences if you do not. So, let’s now ask the question that really matters. Are cribs safe?

This is a more complicated question than it seems because it really depends on the type of crib you are talking about, how old it is, and whether or not it was designed to the baby crib safety standards that are now in place for the industry.

One of the most cost efficient ways to get a bed for your baby is to buy one used, but there is a danger in this. If you go this route you have to determine how old the crib is and if it was manufactured before the current crib safety standards were in place. If it was not, then chances are it could present very serious risks for your baby.

Safe cribs will have many different safety features built right into the design. For example, the amount of space between the bars is very important. If there is too much space a baby could push their head through two bars and get stuck. This could end in them being strangled. Again, not something you want to think about as a parent, but not thinking about it could come at serious cost.

If you want to purchase a used baby bed, make sure to look up the most current crib safety guidelines and closely inspect the crib to ensure it is in compliance. Some older beds may be able to meet these standards while some newer beds may fall a little short. Just make sure to give the bed a close look over before you bring it into your home, no matter how old it is.

It is possible to find a safe used crib that will save you a lot of money over purchasing brand new, but you have to ensure they are in compliance with safety standards.

Most of the cribs currently being sold new are safe cribs, but some will have more safety features than others. It’s important to look around to see what is available and make the best decision based on your budget. If you can afford a higher quality bed that offers extra safety measures than it is well worth the investment.

Crib safety may make the process of shopping for baby products more complicated, but it is absolutely essential for every parent. Most cribs are in fact safe, but it is on you as the parent to determine the level of safety with your personal pick.
